Around the turn of the century, Kansas City went through a period of intense redevelopment and construction. As a crossroads for westward travel, population exploded between the Civil War and Prohibition eras. Firms from Boston, Chicago and New York set up offices around town, and, in 1906, the city�s first skyscrapers began to replace the smaller markets and storefronts.
