Throughout the 1800s, Kansas City thrived as a center of trade between east and west. By the turn of the 20th century, it had blossomed into a major American city. With a population topping a quarter of a million, it was a far cry from the camp set up at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers by explorers Lewis and Clark a century before.
