Kansas City, Missouri, Looking Down Grand Avenue, c1905

Founded as a trading post between settlers and American Indian tribes in 1821, commerce was an integral component of Kansas Citys growth. Throughout the 19th century, increases in cattle shipments to the east and prospectors heading west, spurred a construction boom in the city. Development was most salient in the commercial and entertainment fronts along Grand Avenue, which terminated near the original trading settlement on the bank of the Missouri River.
