Kansas City, Missouri, Main Street from Eighth Avenue, c1930

In the years after the Civil War, Main Street was somewhat of a dividing line in downtown Kansas City. Union supporters typically moved to neighborhoods in the blocks west of Main, while sympathizers of the Confederacy populated streets like Oak and Walnut to the east. As tensions eased over the decades, Main Street naturally developed as a prominent retail thoroughfare between the once-contentious neighborhoods.
