Founded in 1897 at another location on Main Street, the East Hampton Free Library moved to its current location in 1912. Overseeing this move was Ettie Hedges, the towns first librarian, who served in her post for 56 years. In 1915, the library was the cultural hub of the village, offering clubs, concerts and lectures to the village of less than 5,000 people.
