Long Island, New York, Horses in East Hampton, c1937

The coastal plain that stretches to both sides of East Hampton, from Wainscott to Amagansett, was some of the most fertile land on the South Shore, the dunes separating the beach from a coastal plain. The largely agrarian economy dwindled during the resort boom of the early 1900s, but Wainscott farmers survived by growing only potatoes.
