Led by Rosalie Jones, known by her comrades as General Jones, 500 suffragettes marched from Mineola to Hempstead on May 24, 1913. The parade included Boy Scouts, bands and floats decorated with flags and flowers. When it ended in Hempstead, the women dispersed to spread news of the suffrage movement to neighboring Long Island towns.
