Long Island, New York, Residences in East Marion, c1900

Although East Marion was not far from the eastern terminus of the Long Island Rail Roads main line, the sleepy fishing and farming community did not receive many visitors until the turn of the 20th century. As the fishing industry moved elsewhere, so too did its unappealing odor. East Marion and other communities on Long Islands North Fork developed into resort towns, with grand hotels, bandshells, and well-maintained beaches.
