Long Island, New York, Sunset from Manhansett Hotel, Shelter Island, c1905

Shelter Island grew popular with wealthy boat owners during the late 19th century, due to the calm moorings available in its harbor. In 1873, the Manhansett House opened, offering guests individual cottages in which to sleep and a central hotel for dining and entertainment. The hotels holdings also included sports fields, a concert hall, and changing facilities at a private access beach.
