Long Island, New York, Old Field Point Lighthouse, Old Field, c1890

The original Old Field Point Lighthouse was built and first staffed in 1823. When its keeper died shortly thereafter, his widow operated the lighthouse for six months, making her one of the first female keepers in America. After the Civil War, a new lighthouse was constructed to replace the original. It still stands watch 67 feet above Long Island Sound.
