Broughton Street, lined with stores and public services, was Savannah’s premier
shopping district at the turn of the 20th century. Clothing and hat shops shared
space with services like Savannah Electric, the company responsible for lighting
the city’s newly paved streets and powering the trolley cars that traveled the city’s
major thoroughfares.
