Founded in 1733, Savannah developed as a hub of shipping and industry along
the Savannah River. The river’s reach through Georgia and the Carolinas allowed
for the international shipment of cotton and agricultural goods. By 1855, exports
through Savannah’s growing port had risen to more than $20 million, most of
which was from the cotton industry.
