Los Angeles, California, Atop Angels Flight, c1923

When it was built in 1901, the Angels Flight funicular allowed passengers to ride up the face of Bunker Hill from the bustle of downtown to the ritziest neighborhood in the city. The journey was only 315 feet but, at a 33-degree angle, it spared residents quite a climb. The inclined railway continued to operate until 1969, when Bunker Hill was leveled.
