Los Angeles, California, Broadway from Fourth Street, c1900

In the late 19th century, the east side of Broadway was dominated by City Hall Tower, which was the first official city hall of Los Angeles. Before the building was constructed in 1888, the citys government operated out of a hotel. The road ended at the old Broadway Tunnel, which, beginning in 1901, allowed horse carriages to pass under Fort Moore Hill.
