Los Angeles, California, City Hall on the Los Angeles Skyline, c1935

When construction was completed on City Hall in 1928, its pyramid-topped tower was the highest point on the Los Angeles skyline, and remained so by city ordinance until 1968. The minimal damage suffered by the earthquake-proof structure during the 1933 Long Beach earthquake, helped push through the Field Act, which mandated earthquake resistant designs for California school buildings.
