Los Angeles, California, Construction of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, c1923

As college sports became popular spectator events throughout the East Coast, the University of Southern California sought a suitable home for its football team. The university leveraged the city of Los Angeles bid for the 1932 Olympics, submitted in 1923, to raise funds for the construction of a stadium suitable for both purposes. Thus, for many years, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was known as Olympic Stadium.
