Between 1870 and 1900, Los Angeles grew from a village of 5,000 people to a city housing 100,000. The new metropolis was quick to adopt the trappings of a major city, including the installation of the largest electrically operated rail system in the world, development of a central park between Fifth and Sixth streets, and the funding of a modern public library system.
