Opened for swimming in the summer of 1914, the Gordon Park bathhouse was a carefully planned endeavor. It was built after the city parks commission tested the popularity of swimming in the Milwaukee River over several summers, and found it to be sufficiently in demand to warrant the infrastructure investment. The bathhouse allowed for bathing suit rentals at a cost of 25 cents for women and 15 cents for men.
