Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Clybourn Street, c1925

In 1890, the first streetcar arrived to Milwaukee. The public transportation it brought enabled people to live outside the city proper, even as business and entertainment became centralized downtown, and led to the growth of suburbs such as Wauwatosa and South Milwaukee. Ridership, however, began to decline in the 1920s as the automobile gained popularity.
