Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Elevator on the Menomonee, c1885

The Menomonee River and its watershed connects inland trade routes with the Great Lakes near downtown Milwaukee, and have long been critical parts of the citys trade and industry. In the 19th century, various railroad companies built grain elevators to house shipments of wheat traveling between Lake Michigan and the Midwest. At one million bushels, Elevator A on the South Menomonee Canal was one of the highest-capacity silos in the area.
