The Menomonee River and its watershed connects inland trade routes with the Great Lakes near downtown Milwaukee, and have long been critical parts of the city�s trade and industry. In the 19th century, various railroad companies built grain elevators to house shipments of wheat traveling between Lake Michigan and the Midwest. At one million bushels, Elevator A on the South Menomonee Canal was one of the highest-capacity silos in the area.
