Minneapolis, Minnesota, Christmas Time on Seventh Street, c1927

Until the mid-19th century, Christmas as we know it now was not widely celebrated in the United States. Instead, isolated pockets of immigrants in American cities observed varying forms of the holiday brought from their home countries. After the Civil War, and with the birth of electricity, the newly unified country began the now common tradition of observing Christmas with opulent public light displays.
