Once a plainly adorned, three-story hotel serving the logging communities of Bretton Woods, the Mount Pleasant House was enlarged and ornamented across the 1890s by Joseph Stickney. Stickney not only greatly expanded the hotels capacity, he also focused on providing sufficient accommodations to please the nations wealthiest visitors. He developed trails, dammed the Ammonoosuc River to make a scenic lake, and laid out sports fields on his propertys extensive lawns.
