Niagara Falls, New York, Frozen Base of the Falls, c1885

In 1885, the State Reservation of Niagara, now known as Niagara Falls State Park, became the first state park in the country. A popular destination no matter the weather, the rushing waters have appeared to have frozen several times throughout history. In 1888, the falls froze solid enough for people to go sledding, and as recently as 2015, a polar vortex created perfect conditions for two ice climbers.
