Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Along the Allegheny River, c1922

Control of the Allegheny River was a factor in both the French & Indian War and the American Revolution. The area was later found to be rich in resources and the first commercial petroleum well in the United States was drilled north of the river in 1859. A primary route for coal in the 19th century, the river continues to be used for commercial transport today.
