Resource-rich Pittsburgh saw rapid growth across the second half of the 19th century. With seemingly inexhaustible mineral deposits, ready access to lumber, and an extensive network of navigable rivers, the land around the city was quickly claimed and developed by industrial interests. Thus, downtown Pittsburgh flourished, as laborers, traders, and support industries flocked to the city to capitalize on the riot of production taking place in the surrounding hills.
