Portland, Oregon, Ships at the Harbor, c1910

With the arrival of the transcontinental railroad in 1883, goods could be shipped by sea to Portland, and then moved across America on the railroad, and vice versa. The Portland Harbor was officially incorporated in 1891, maintaining a channel on the Columbia and Willamette rivers. Specialty ships carrying grain from the Midwest to Liverpool earned the nickname, The Wheat Fleet.
