Portland, Oregon, Skidmore Fountain, c1900

Named after donor Stephen Skidmore and styled after fountains he saw in Versailles, Skidmore Fountain was intended to be both beautiful and practical. Portland brewer Hank Weinhard offered to pump his beer to the fountain for the dedication in 1888, but the fire department feared the public would pierce their hoses to intercept the flow, and so the offer was declined.
