Portland, Oregon, North Lombard Street, c1932

Portlands center, St. Johns, located to the northwest of Portland, developed somewhat independently of the larger city. Once the site of camps made by explorers Lewis and Clark, the town established its own industry and streetlined businesses in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After citizens voted to be annexed by Portland in 1915, St. Johns retained its character as a distinct neighborhood down the Willamette River.
