In 1871 Betsey Williamsdescendant of city founder Roger Williamsgifted her familys farm to the City of Providence, in an age when the growing city was in dire need of open, public green space. The park quickly became a beloved recreation destination for residents, with attractions including a small zoo and a famed merry-go-round. Erected in 1896, the Dalrymple Boathouse was situated lakeside amidst the attractions and became a central entertainment destination for visitors.
