Richmond emerged from the Revolutionary War as an important industrial center
and grew to become one of the largest cities in the newly formed nation. By the
end of the Civil War nearly a century later, 80 percent of the buildings in downtown
Richmond had burned down, set alight by retreating Confederate troops.
The city quickly rebuilt and rebounded to once again become an economic, industrial
and transportation powerhouse.
