Richmond, Virginia, Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument, c1905

The Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument stands high above the hill that is said to have given Richmond its name. From atop Libby Hill, William Byrd II stood and took in the sweeping panorama of the James River, which he equated to the view from Richmond upon Thames in England. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument was completed there in 1894, overlooking the site of the Confederate Navy Yard, in tribute to the soldiers and sailors of the Confederacy.
