Richmond, Virginia, Hucksters Outside the Sixth Street Market, c1908

When Shockhoe Hill was selected as the site of the new Capitol building, Thomas Jefferson imagined a new city spread throughout six public squares that dotted the hillside. A successful market was key to any citys public order, and as Richmond expanded outward, subsidiary markets developed in distinct neighborhoods. Due to its centralized location, the market built on Sixth and Marshall Streets developed by the turn of the century into the most significant market hall in the growing city.
