Broad Street developed around the turn of the century into the hub of Richmond�s retail development. A vast network of shops, hotels, restaurants and theatres emerged on the thoroughfare, stretching out from the city�s civic center into emerging neighborhoods. As the city rapidly expanded throughout the early 1900s, so too did commerce on Broad Street.
