Richmond, Virginia, The Old Bell Tower, c1908

Richmonds Old Bell Tower was constructed as a guardhouse in 1824, and has served a variety of functions for the city throughout its history. Originally used as part of the citys alarm system to alert the fire brigade, it later served during the Civil War to warn citizens of the impending encroachment of federal troops. To this day, the new bell within the tower is used to call the Virginia legislature to session.
