Richmond, Virginia, The Virginia State Capitol, c1908

Thomas Jefferson conceived of the Virginia State Capitol, which houses the oldest continuous legislature in the Western Hemisphere, during his tenure as a wartime governor of the state. Inspired by a Roman temple in Southern France, the neoclassical design became a template for government buildings and banks in America. The building also served as the capitol of the Confederacy during the Civil War, escaping tragedy when the Confederate troops spared it as they pulled out of the burning city.
