Richmond, Virginia, Viewing Richmond from Hollywood, c1902

Throughout the 19th century, Richmond grew into the most successful commercial center of the South, fueled by the growth of the tobacco and iron industries. More than 50 tobacco factories were spread throughout the metropolitan area, and the Tredagor Iron Works produced large quantities of ammunition during the Civil War. The need for transportation of its various products gave birth to an intricate railway system that included the creation of elevated tracks.
