Rochester, New York, Car on the Rochester Subway, c1927

Initially constructed in the bed of the now obsolete Erie Canal, the Rochester Subway operated from 1927 to 1956. A two-mile portion of the route became the systems only underground section, the top of the tunnel birthing Broad Street. The Rochester Subway met its fate mainly due to its predetermined course along the canal, and the growing influence of the automobile as a more suitable means of transportation.
