Rochester, New York, Upper Falls on the Genesee, c1912

The Genesee River was responsible not only the initial settlement of the city, but much of Rochesters early development and industry. Three waterfalls were located along the river that Rochester was built up around, the largest of which is known as High Falls. The hydroelectric power generated from the falls fueled the citys mills and factories, and led to Rochester becoming an industrial leader during the 1800s.
