Before the construction of automobile bridges which span the San Francisco Bay, options for accessing the city from the east were limited either to a lengthy train ride north around the water or a ferry crossing. Both options arrived at the site of the Ferry Building, which after its opening in 1898 became one of the busiest transportation hubs in the world.
