San Francisco, California, Climbing California Street, c1901

Set amid steep coastal hills, San Franciscos early development stuck largely to the low-lying areas of the San Francisco Bay. As gold and silver rushes brought wealth to the city, the newly rich erected their homes atop the commanding rises away from the waterfront. With many well-heeled patrons to be won, Andrew Smith Hallidie pioneered a system of cable cars to ease the difficulty of the climb into the citys developing hilltop neighborhoods.
