San Francisco, California, Construction of the Bay Bridge, c1934

Built from 1933 to 1936, the Bay Bridge spans more than eight miles over the San Francisco Bay. Bridge building was a dangerous job in those days, with minimum safety standards and only a net of wire mesh between the workers and the bay below. Twenty-eight men lost their lives during the project. Upon completion, it became the longest bridge in the world.
