San Francisco, California, Crossing the Bay, c1890

Marine extensions of railroad service, ferry boats made their first bay crossings shortly after the discovery of gold in the nearby Sierra Nevada. The steamship The Oakland belonged to the Southern Pacific Railroad, and carried passengers between Oakland and San Francisco from 1875 until 1940, when it was destroyed by fire.
