San Francisco, California, James Clair Flood Mansion, California Street, c1940

Built by a silver baron in 1886, the James Clair Flood Mansion was one of the only buildings on Nob Hill to survive the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. After the quake, the exclusive, mens-only Pacific Union Club moved into the mansion. The Club has been made up of some of the Bay Areas most prominent citizens, but to this day, its workings remain a mystery.
