San Francisco, California, Ocean Beach from the Cliff House, c1900

South along the shore from San Franciscos famed Cliff House lies Ocean Beach, which was developed, with the additions of Seal Rock Hotel and the Ocean Beach Pavilion, around the same time as the noted restaurant. While the attractions at the pavilion brought guests to the beach, the relatively cold and windy waterfront was not ideal for bathing, so in 1896, Adolph Sutro opened the heated Sutro Baths to the north.
