San Francisco, California, The Call Building, c1904

Built in 1898 to house a newspaper by the same name, the San Francisco Call Building was one of the few structures that survived the citys disastrous 1906 earthquake. Despite being repaired of extensive damages caused by a fire following the quake, the Call Building was largely abandoned by its original tenants. In 1938, the dome was removed from the top of the skyscraper to allow for the addition of six new floors.
