Savannah, Georgia, An Illuminated Broughton Street, c1910

Savannahs first incandescent lights appeared in a jewelry store on Broughton Street in the 1890s. By 1902, Savannah Electric had taken on the responsibility of lighting all of the citys paved streets and powering passenger trolleys. The bright lights and ease of travel propelled Broughton Street into becoming a commercial and banking center, allowing stores and restaurants to remain open later, and residents and tourists alike to be shuttled into the city center.
