After the Civil War, Savannah entered a difficult time in its history; the economy was in ruins and the entire city had to rebuild. Yet despite the hardships of the era of Reconstruction, the freed slaves who decided to stay overcame prejudice and birthed a prosperous community. They built their own churches, schools and businesses, and Savannah emerged as an important city for African Americans in the reunited United States.
