Savannah, Georgia, Fountain in Forsyth Park, c1895

Constructed in 1858, the fountain at the center of Forsyth Park is one of the gems of Savannahs system of green parks and squares that spread throughout the city. Both the park and the fountain were created as part of an urban beautification process in the mid-1800s. The charm of French urban renewal efforts in Paris inspired city planners to strive for a city that was not just commercially successful, but also beautiful.
