Syracuse, New York, Crowds on South Salina at Jefferson, c1920

By the mid-1800s, trains from the recently consolidated New York Central Railroad operated on public streets directly through downtown Syracuse. The prevalence of railways, along with its proximity to the Erie Canal, enabled the city to develop into an important trade and transportation hub for Central New York. The neighborhood around South Salina and West Jefferson streets, just south of the canal, had developed by the turn of the century into an important center of commerce for the region.
