Vermont, A Covered Bridge in Rutland, c1925

The Billings Bridge was one of 14 covered bridges in Rutland Township. Built in 1831 by Timothy K. Horton, the bridges Town Lattice design supported the stress of passing traffic with rafters interwoven above the passageway. During heavy spring flooding, the bridge would sometimes be partially submerged by Otter Creek, but the weight of its slate roof prevented it from washing away.
